Description doctorq9 2008-11-07 18:35:11 UTC
Use of the "Check for Updates" feature under "HELP" toolbar results in error
message being returned from Oo server. A review of the Community Boards shows
that this is happening to a number of folks!
Comment 1 michael.ruess 2008-11-07 18:45:22 UTC
Framework issue.
Reassigned to OF.
Comment 2 Mechtilde 2008-11-08 23:12:00 UTC
I can confirm it today 2008-11-08
Comment 3 Stefan Weigel 2008-11-10 09:25:08 UTC
I can confirm it today 2008-11-10.

Observation is:

* Check for update fails most of the time. If you try over and over and over
again, you may be lucky and receive an answer from the service.

* Once you reach the update service it tells you: "OpenOffice.org 2.4 is up to
date")
Comment 4 Olaf Felka 2008-11-10 09:58:05 UTC
@ bei: Please have a look.
Comment 5 bernd.eilers 2008-11-10 10:46:39 UTC
bei->jj: the service is up and running, but with the currently used hardware we
just can not handle the load. Please advise.
Comment 6 hans_werner67 2008-11-10 11:22:30 UTC
Re-assign to fma.

This issue is under investigation, we want to move the service on a different
machine for further tests. Please stay tuned.

Thank you,
Frank

Short update:
The server is running faster but unfortunately the number of requests is very
high. Another point is issue 96174 -> The office sends too many requests to get
the update information. Fixed in 3.0.1 and 3.1. So we expect a decrease of
requests by 40%-50% on the server.

We will still work on a general solution the issue.

Short update:
The number of invalid non-GET requests decrease, so we're on track to have a
stable solution for related issue #96174#. Data provided inside the description
of the issue.

Short update today, we made some significant performance improvements. In
rush-hour-times we had up to 200 req/sec. and the server can handle it. We try
to increase this value... stay tuned.

Cheers,
Frank

I´ve been checking for updates every now and then in the last couple of days.

Observation is:

 * Still appr. 50% of queries fail.

 * Once you reach the update service, it tells you "OOo 3.1.1 is up to date",
although 3.2.0 was released 8 days ago.

Ok, this is no problem for us. We´re experts! :-) But this is a big problem for
the general reputation of the project.

I doubt that "Not determined" is an appropriate TM for a P2 problem; I agree
with sweigel

This should be a release_blocker.

It is intilerable to have an unsuable function of update services.

After a release we publish that this release contains security fixes and the
update services didn't work.

Comment 20 Graham Perrin 2010-11-06 11:00:13 UTC
FWIW I sometimes sense that an error is more likely if the manual check is made soon after launching OOo.

I wonder: what happens if a manual check (with a GUI) coincides with an automated check (which probably
presents no GUI unless an update is available)?

I'm reminded of another bug relating to update errors …
Comment 21 Graham Perrin 2010-11-06 11:40:23 UTC
Issue 94174 opened 2008-09-22 is:

> Checking for an update failed. - without description

sometimes bugging Mac OS X,
confirmed by votes 2009-10-28,
then in that issue, users of Windows XP reported the same problem.

Comment 23 George Schreyer 2011-12-13 23:33:31 UTC
Check for Updates fails in 3.2 and 3.3 under Parallels 5 and 6 and in Mac OS 10.6 and 10.7.

Could not establish network connection to update36.services.openoffice.org

In one configuration (OO 3.3, Snow Leopard, Parallels 5, Windows 7)

The server number has been different at times.
Comment 24 Andrea Pescetti 2011-12-14 00:07:05 UTC
The update servers have been (temporarily) shut down with the, still ongoing, infrastructure migration to the Apache Foundation servers. It is possible that they will be restored by the moment there is a version 3.4 available (much likely called "Apache OpenOffice 3.4").

See the mailing list at http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-ooo-dev/ for more. Or the migration status at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/OpenOffice.org+Migration+Status
Comment 25 professor_frink 2012-04-23 10:56:17 UTC
Not sure what what the status/progress is with this, but I can confirm that this is still a problem, inc. in Windows 7, OOO330m20, build:9567 :

Could not establish network connection to update36.services.openoffice.org.
Comment 26 Firedude 2012-05-21 20:16:33 UTC
(In reply to comment #25)
This is still a problem for me, too. I have never been able to update my OO v3.3.0 via the Help|Check for Update utility. I get the same error message as professor_frink, George Schreyer and others before them.

HELP! This problem has been going on since 2008? wassup with THAT?!?
Comment 27 Andrea Pescetti 2012-05-21 20:29:24 UTC
CCing Oliver-Rainer Wittman who is restoring the service right now (just restored for the new OpenOffice 3.4, soon to be restored for 3.3 too). For more, see recent discussions on http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-ooo-dev/
Comment 28 Oliver-Rainer Wittmann 2012-05-23 07:05:43 UTC
I am working on resolving this issue by bringing back the update services for former OOo versions on bug 119323.
Thus, marking this issue as duplicate

suggest owner close it,because we can be tracking the problem by 119323.
Comment 30 Andrea Pescetti 2012-06-19 06:18:59 UTC
Closing duplicate. The problem is already solved for all 3.4 versions and for most 3.3 versions, more details in bug 119323 .
