The "file" menu becomes too wide, because of the rather long pathnames of the
"recent files" in its bottom. This makes the submenus, e.g. for "New" go
inconveniently far to the right. 

If it is possible to reclaim the space to the left and right of the "recent
files" names, that would be a good idea, since this section of the menu does not
display icons or shortcuts anyway. 

It might also be a good idea to just show the file names, not including the
directory paths. They tend to clutter rather than provide useful information.
And they are shown anyway as a help tip when the mouse pointer is placed over them.
