Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 93358
"Checking capitalization" does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:29:51 UTC
Under Tools-Options-Language Settings-Writing Aids-Options, "Checking capitalization" does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. . This function has been moved to Tools-Autocorrect...-Options, "Capitalize first letter of every sentence" . Thanks
That's true even with OOo 3.1.0. Unchecking it doesn't disable automatic capitalization.
Sure it does not disable automatic capitalization. That's because it has nothing to do with it! If you want to stop automatic capitalization go and change the respective setting for the auto correction. The effect of setting in Writing Aids can only be seen if a word was written in lowercase that always needs to be written with a uppercase starting character. The other way around can't be checked since any word can be at the start of a sentence and thus may start with an uppercase letter. To see that it would require a word like "edison". If capitalization checking is turned off than the lowecase written word should not be marked as wrong. However debugging the current implementation it turns out that in case of "edison" the spell checker returns SPELLING_ERROR where it better should have returned CAPTION_ERROR in 'GetSpellFailure'. tl->nemeth: Is it possible for hunspell to properly detect capitalization errors and return CAPTION_ERROR for those?
I think I understand the difference but would you say it is possible to guess this by the interface? Isn't it the case to explain it better in the interface? Anyway, thanks for the information.
nemeth->tl: It's possible. I have already seen the different return values in the OOo spell checking API, but I haven't checked the real usage, yet.
