Description rosspjohnson 2008-05-30 01:40:21 UTC
With the "after text" spacing set for paragraphs, that spacing is not added
between the end of text lines and the frame edge when wrapping.

E.g. I have a 2 column page with a centre image that sits over the column gap.
The left column lines of text (language text flow is left to right in this case)
continue right up to the left edge of the frame (or contour or image, depending
on settings).

The space before setting is added correctly, e.g. in the right-hand column
between right edge of frame and start of each text line.

I will attach two examples of the same document page:-
1) image using an edited contour with paragraph background coloured,
2) image with contour turned off.

Also seen in OOo 2.4, so is probably not new.

I've just noticed something in example 1 (paragraph background coloured) that I
believe is strange and inconsistent.

Assuming that the background colouring is showing what is the paragraph area,
where there is no wrapping around the frame that area corresponds to the actual
text area after before and after text spacing has been taken into account. But
where there is wrapping (right-hand text column abutting the image), the
background colouring extends to the left, outside of the actual text area.

This isn't consistent. I would have expected the background colouring for the
wrapped paragraphs in the right-hand column to not extend beyond the actual text
area, as is the case for the unwrapped paragraphs.

Perhaps there are more than just one problem here.

I don't know what the correct terminology to use is. It appears that left and
right margins are computed for each paragraph based on the various indentation
settings, which then defines where paragraph content can be rendered (text,
background, etc.). This is what I see for the unwrapped text. If that is the
case, then neither left nor right margins is correctly computed for paragraphs
wrapped around frames (as indicated by the background colouring). The other
problem could therefore be that space before text is applied in the wrong place
for wrapped paragraphs. It appears correct only if there is no background colouring.

This setting will only affect the spacing to the right page border / text
border. The spacing between an object and the text is specified in the object's
properties on the "Wrap" tab.

Then, in any case, the examples show that "space before" and "space after" are
inconsistently applied. I.e. "space before" has been applied between the start
of text and the right edge of the object when, according to the rule there
should be no space.

I have opened issue number 90587 to report this inconsistency.

IMO it would be more intuitive to add the Before/After text spacing at all times
since I believe that is the users intent when specifying those options.
Introducing special contexts where that does not apply only distracts the user.
Any object wrap spacing should be added to the text spacing, giving the user
more flexibility in formating documents if they choose whilst making their job
easier at the same time. That is, IMO, this issue 90130 should be reopened and
issue closed.
