Description discoleo 2007-07-22 16:56:32 UTC
The presenter uses during a presentation a laser-pointer or the computer mouse
to highlight relevant parts of the slide.

Unfortunately, this is suboptimal and often hard to see. As more and more
presentations are offered online, this becomes even more so a critical issue.

= *INTRO* =

In the past several years, more and more presentations are held online.
Actually, the trend is clearly away from the classic meeting involving sitting
in front of a beamer and watching a power point (or impress) presentation
projected on the wall.

Several sites have specialized on online presentations, like Medscape
(http://www.medscape.com) and Univadis (http://www.univadis.de). There are
dozens of other sites and the number is likely to increase further.

See issue 79866 (http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=79866) for the
full details. This feature request is another issue in the same series, intended
to make Impress more web-friendly and expand its usability using web-technologies.

= *SOLUTION* =

Fortunately, the web offers a very nice solution to this issue. Almost every
table on the net (including the tables generated on OOo IssueZilla, see e.g.
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/buglist.cgi?Submit+query=Submit+query&issue_type=FEATURE&component=Presentation&issue_status=NEW&version=OOo+2.0&version=OOo+2.0.1&version=OOo+2.0.2&version=OOo+2.0.3&version=OOo+2.0.4&version=OOo+2.1&version=OOo+2.2.1&
and phpMyAdmin) use a small java-script (a dozen lines of js code) to highlight
the current row.

The effect is both pleasing to the eye and allows a presenter to highlight *ALL
the relevant information* at once, something NOT possible with a pointer. Also,
this is appealing for online presentations.

= *EXAMPLE* =

To further illustrate this issue, I will attach an HTML-presenatations making
use of this feature (I wrote the presentation in 2004; see
http://sourceforge.net/projects/webaprez on Sourceforge.net for the php-script I
wrote to generate this presentation).

This issue blocks issue 66169
(http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=66169).

== *FURTHER EXAMPLES* ==

I have filed a similar feature request for the OOo Calc component, see issue
78181. Both calc and Impress would benefit from this feature.
