Description Rainer Bielefeld 2006-10-22 17:50:41 UTC
During my tests for Issue 70665 I found out, that in "2.0.4 German version WIN
XP: [680m5(Build9073)]" the setting in menu "Extras - Options - Openoffice.org
Writer - Contents/Print black" only works for printer (OJ6110), but not for
PDF-export.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open 'testdoc.odt' with 2.0.4 from attached testkit.zip
2. menu "Extras - Options - Openoffice.org Writer - Contents/Print black",
  check checkbox for "black"
3. Print document
expected: all colours will be shown excepted for text, what will
             all be black
   actual: as expected
3. export document to PDF
   expected: looks as printout
actual: coloured text will remain coloured.

That works for me with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP: [680m5(Build9011)]", but
is already broken with "2.0.X WIN XP: [680m180 (Build9056)]".

I also saw the expected behaviour with "1.1.4 (German) WIN XP: [645m52 (Build
8824)]"

I looked for a spec, whether printer settings should influence pdf export, but I
found nothing. Such spec is necessary to decide, whether it is OK in OOo2.0.4 on
WinXP and broken in Linux or the other way round.

I think, printer settings should not influence pdf export, because it is useful
to be able to set the printer settings to ones own black/write printer, but
export in color to pdf.

May be it's more an UI than a GSL problem. After my tests with 2.0.2, the PDF
export remained in the "Black Text Mode", although I had unchecked the checkbox.
I had to close OOo and to restart Ooo to get back coloured text.

Why should print settings affect PDF export ? If you export to .doc format,
would you expect the text to appear black when its blue ?

However if that was the case in 2.0.2 but is no more in 2.0.4 i suspect somebody
changed something in writer.

pl->fme: Was this change intentional (actually the change sounds like a bugfix
to me)

@pl:
Please let me do some general annotations:
Currently (I speak about 1.1.4 .... 2.0.2) many printer settings affect PDF
export, and we should be very very conservative with changes for that. It can be
useful to handle PDF preferences together with printer preferences, because one
of the usages of PDF export is to replace printouts, and many users (like me)
will be used to work with those settings for their needs. 10 years ago I sent a
print to customer for approval, today I send a PDF. And nor in print neither in
PDF I want to let the customer see internal notes, so it is useful to block
notes for the PDF export together with the block for prints (this only for
example). It would be fateful if confidential contents would be published
because these settings became disabled for PDF export without hints for the users.

I doubt whether it is useful to compare .doc export with PDF export concerning
this issue.
Comment 7 philipp.lohmann 2006-10-23 17:39:28 UTC
I guess more people would be distracted by unvoluntarily changing the PDF export
while playing with their printer settings. As for the involuntarily sending
privileged information: if you send a PDF without having it reviewed first you
are in error anyway, regardless what printer settings are in use. If there are
any missing options in PDF export, fine, let's add them. But printer settings
should not influence document export normally IMHO.
Comment 8 Rainer Bielefeld 2006-10-23 19:07:12 UTC
No doubt, a clear separation of PDF export properties from printer settings
would be the best solution.

FME->QA: Please set an appropriate target. Please check if user experience wants
to change our current behavior.

HI: From my point of view OOo2.0.2 was the buggy candidate.
This issue is changed from defect to enhancement.
HI->MMP: Please decide the target in case we implement the feature to adjust the
font color by pdf-export
