Description Unknown 2002-08-14 14:56:07 UTC
Hardware:
 - Acer Travelmate notebook
 - Pentium3 1.0GHz processor
 - S3 graphics 4xAGP
 - 15.1" XGA screen
 - S-video out, built lan......
 - Via68a sound
 - 256M ram

Software:
 - Pretty standard Suse7.3 installation
 - XFree86 version: 4.1.0
 - running KDE

As the summary states the screen flashes madly with rectangle and square boxes
all over the screen when the installation welcome screen pops up. At soon as
this happens the whole system simply freezes up and there is nothing I can do
but to kill the system and restart.

I discovered, however, a very interesting thing. I started another X(just X and
nothing else) and display a console on the second X. I cd'd to the OpenOffice
installation dir and started the installation there. Bingo it worked. So I went
back to my normal working environment(KDE) and started swriter and it worked.
However, to my dismay when I tried to open a folder to access a file the same
thing happens and the system died. I hope someone can help me it is quite
desperate. Thanks very much

Hi Christof,
this is something I've nerver seen (and heard) before. Can you imagine
what happen on this machine? Is it KDE 4.1.0? I've no idea.

I have no idea about that. I can just guess that this is an X driver
problem. Please upgrade to XFree86 4.2.0 and see what happens.

sorry, no chance to reproduce. I can only suggest to experiment with a
more recent X Server and to check if it is possible to work in
standard VGA mode (for testing purpose). Since it's the XServer that
runs out of control, it's probably not a OOo problem (at least not
directly)

Hi everyone,

I have finally found out the what the culprit that causes my system to
freez up. It is the savage driver: savage_drv.o. I have replaced with
a different driver module and my system is chugging along happily now.
Just in case someone out there is having the same problem, I will
provide some further information about my hardware. I have an Acer
laptop with the following video chip: S3 ProSavage Twister, Chip id:
8d01, Product Rev: 1.1. To fix the problem, remove the savage_drv.o
that comes with SuSE7.3 and replace it with this one:
http://www.probo.com/timr/xf41free.tgz(savage_driv.o is packed in it).

Thanks alot again guys for your suggestions.

Fred
