Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 69644
Placing cursor sometimes erroneously gives dragging guides for (numbering) indents
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:17:51 UTC
If I want to highlight the first few words in an indented line, I place my cursor just before the start of an indented line, as in every other Windows or Linux application. However, if I place my cursor in a certain position, I end up dragging the indent inwards. This behaviour is unexpected. It is never likely to be what the user intended, because there is no way to know exactly where to place the cursor. Only a fraction of a millimetre either way causes the indent to be captured, or not captured. If the user actually does want to drag the indent, they can do it on the ruler. If OOo people want to keep this feature, they should allow the user to specify which option they prefer, using Tools > Options
I cannot see the problem on my system (WIn XP, OO 2.0.3). Could you please attach a document where this happens?
Created attachment 39505 [details] Example file for unintentionally dragging the indent
I have attached an example file. 1) Go to actual page 7 (page with "1" in footer) 2) Scroll half-way down to "Logging in". 3) You see some numbered statements of style "Numbering 2", and some non-numbered statements of style "Numbering 2 Cont." 3) To start the cycle, place your cursor in the middle of any non-numbered style line. 4) Now insert your cursor just before the first letter of a numbered style line (such as the "I" of "In your browser ...") The vertical guide line should appear. 5) If it doesn't, insert your cursor in a non-numbered style line again. 6) Again insert your cursor just before the "I", but in a slighly different position each time, until you hit the guide line. (I can produce this line 90% of the time.) 7) If you do not place your cursor in a non-numbered style line at the start of each attempt, you will never launch the guide line.
Created attachment 39553 [details] same sample; shorter version
Created attachment 39556 [details] Grrrr, thi is the shorter one, of course...
MRU->OD: take the "short" attachment; there place the cursor in an unnumbered paragraph and the try to place it at the beginning of a numberd one (right following the numbering label) -> this will sometimes give you the "dragging" guides for editing the numbering indent. But this will chnage the indent of the paragraph where the cursor was before...
