Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 69092
there is no way to set image as background for cell
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:12:27 UTC
there is no way to set image as background for cell. context menu -> cell properties -> background allows only set color.
It's not an issue. For this behaviour you have to submit an issue with an enhancement request. From the help, searching for background you can find some step to use an image as background for some cells. Tell me now if I can close the issue, or if you want to be converted in enhancement.
On M$ Office Excel you can set on cell background: pattern, iamage, color. So, if i open with OOo a document created with M$ Office Excel: how can i change image? I understand it as issue of compatibility with M$ Office format. Also, how to explain to user, that it is possible to set image on table cell in OOo Write, but not possible on Calc. For them it is the same thing.
As discussed by email with fst, this is an enhancement request. As Excel could do images in cell backgrounds just with the latest Edition it could not be anything other as an enhancement. A defect is described by broken functionality. As this functionality is and was not given at any time in the past for Calc, it could not be a defect. Bye Ambrogio

I suggest to join (expand) this issue with http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16642 and change the summary to "Allow patterns and images as background for cell"
