Description Unknown 2002-08-09 07:57:20 UTC
I am a first user of OpenOffice and am hoping that it will be tremendously
successful!!
I am concerned about referring neighbors and coworkers to the DOWNLOAD web
page because it is not designed for the common or slightly more savvy user.
Please take this as a constructive criticism. I am very interested in seeing
this project being even more successful than Linux. Open Source Rules!
But please listen to my concerns because from a user standpoint, I know very
well what I am talking about:
It is easy to send power users and project collaborators to a "power user"
style web page, but it is VERY discouraging to have common users to browse
through a "power user" type web page structure, which is exactly what
www.openoffice.org has at this point.
My suggestion is:
Make this site for the common users, please. They will make the bulk of your
users in the near future, I sincerely hope. Start catering to them and have a
link that caters to the power users who feel more at home with a more complex
web page. Please do this quick, so I can start asking family and friends to
visit www.openoffice.org. If I send them here now, they WILL BE TURNED OFF.
I just know it. I have a very good feel for it and am writing from a user
standpoint.
My background: I work for Honeywell International, which has spent thousands
and thousands of $ training me to be sensitive to what prospective customers
are looking for.
Please let me know how I can help. I don't have much time available, but I
would hate to see a project of such potential being delayed in its acceptance
by the user community just because users feel intimidated by the two most
important web pages: www.openoffice.org and
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/1.0.1/index.html

Thank you for putting out such a great product that will BRAND the open source
concept as a QUALITY and VALUE item.
Best regards, and best of luck. Mark mark@villela.com

The page you mention here is the the standard download page.
Some drafts have been made in order to create a better download page,
some of them being located at OODocs. If you want to change this page,
please be aware we might have to change the whole web site look&feel.

Sincerely,

CHS.
