Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 6764
Add AbiWord XML schema to import/export for OpenOffice.org
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:36:49 UTC
There is a plug-in to AbiWord that allows import/export of OpenOffice.org files. I believe it would be very beneficial to have OpenOffice.org offer a complimentary filter. There may be some updates to the XML schema, so some coordination between the two teams should be appropriate. Ideal would be if the different schemas could be auto-detected. http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/abiword-dev/00/October/0381.html
This previous request for Abiword support was closed as wontfix http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=2007 hopefully this request will be considered more carefully now that Abiword has stablised as 1.0.x
I think we should be interoperable with other major open source apps.

My two cents: Most of the infrastructure for XML import/export is in place, and one 'only' needs to write XSLT stylesheets for the import and export logic. These could easily be tested and developed 'dry', i.e. outside of the actual office. There is an example (for DocBook) available on the xml.openoffice.org page. Considering the previous wont-fix for the other issue, I doubt that Sun will do this. But why not find someone in the community to do it? The AbiWord schema seems reasonably simple. I'll be happy to give advice, but I won't take this on myself.
Reassigned to CJ.
Reassiged to Bettina.
what is the current status on this? Is this only relevant for Word Processor?
With the news of Koffice switching to the OOo file format, maybe what should really happen here is that Abiword should make the switch too.
paraphrase ~ Abiword should switch ~ This thread and the links from it explain why that is highly unlikely to happen for the forseeable future. http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/abiword-dev/2003/Aug/0225.html Abiword is working towards supporting the comlicated OpenOffice file format and it would be nice if OpenOffice could import at least the some of the basic formatting* of an abiword document which is relatively simple in comparison. (* Even as much as the text with line breaks and bold, italic, underline would be fantastic).
