Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 64104
using cursor keys: very slow scrolling with templates window open
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:11:23 UTC
Hello, I am using OOo 2.0.2 on SuSE Linux and Mac OS X and both systems experience very slow scrolling when the F11 "Formatvorlagen" (German for Templates) window is opened. Plus, even scrolling an empty spreadsheet uses about 40% of my 1.8GHz P4 processor (for what?). I am attaching an example spreadsheet to test this out. I tried disabling font antialiasing which did not change anything. The scrolling speed, and flickering, seems to depend on how much text is displayed (ie how full the cells are). Please investigate this. If you want me to test debug builds, I'll gladly help. Thanks! Jens
Created attachment 35557 [details] example document that exhibits this behaviour
WFM with with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP: [680m5(Build9011)]" on Athlon 3200+ 1GB But I can confirm that quick vertycally scrolling of an empty a4 spreadsheet page causes much more processor load (45%) than scrolling an empty WRITER page (15%). @enforcer2: How excactly do you scroll? Pushing scroll slider or .... Any infouence whether auto spell check is disabled or enabled?
Hello and thanks for replying! I am scrolling with the keyboard ("down") key. Scrolling by moving the scrollbars with the mouse doesn't cause abnormally high CPU load. Under MacOS, scrolling down lags (ie. the keyboard sends many more "down arrow" commands per second than OOo is able to handle and if you release the key it keeps scrolling), but scrolling up lags far more heavily, getting slower the more data of a spreadsheet you can see. My finance plan for example will have OOo scroll with about two lines per second, while the whole page flickers wildly (and several times per scroll event). Disabling all auto spell check features didn't change anything (can you do this globally somewhere?). Disabling antialiasing didn't either.
Can not reproduce with OOo 2.2-RC3 on Windows XP "OS all" is not correct according to the description
enforcer2, any chance you could test with current version and provide screenshot if that dialog (as F11 brings "Styles and formatting" for me).
I re-tested this again with OOo 2.2 on Linux (.deb packages, Ubuntu Edgy). Resolution: Scrolling DOWN with F11 (templates) window open is fast. Scrolling UP with F11 windo open is still SLOW. Plus, scrolling UP withOUT F11 windows open will get progressively slower with each line that is scrolled. All done with the keyboard cursor keys only. Using the mouse is always fast. If you need any more information, please do ask. Yes, the F11 dialog is "styles and formatting". It lists formatting templates for the spreadsheet. Thanks!
Confirming with both 2.0.4 and 2.2 on Suse 10.2 KDE (Athlon XP 2200, 2GB of RAM, Nvidia FX5200). Repro steps: 1. Open attached file, do not click on ant other cell, just press and hold arrow down. 2. Depending on whether "Styles and Formatting" window is visible or not, scrolling will be OK (~10 rows per second if window is closed) or very slow (~2 rows per second with window visible) with screen flickering and visible redraw. Displaying "Styles and Formatting" after opening the file does not slow down the scroll, only if "Styles and Formatting" is opened before file scroll is slow.
Hi Niklas, please have a look at this one. Frank
