Description lars 2002-07-05 21:47:55 UTC
I like to have borders around my cells, background colors for my cells,
formulas and values in my cell.

Yet when i copy a cell, I can insert either everything or only text.

Is it possible to make a layered attribute model available, so that i can
select whether i want to copy one, some or all of the layers?

Hi LArs,

it's possible now.

Just use Paste Special from the Edit menu.

Best regards

Frank

ah, that's "insert content" (translated from german).

Formerly "insert content" was the function which is now integrated
into the insert icon function (that's choosing the format); I never
tried that edit menu insert content fct. again.

But insert content is an appropriate name; and it#s even available in
context menu! (well done)

Look at the edit-insert content (translated from german version)
function when you have a bitmap (or nothing) in the windows clipboard
and look at the paste icon when long clicking it.

they show the same (that is: they let select the type as which it
should be inserted).

Now copy a cell

Look at both again: the paste icon shows types again, but the insert
content function offers that "layered attribute model".

The paste icon -long click should also offer the attribute model

offer a "insert type" submenu in the context menu like in the toolbar
icon
Comment 6 oc 2002-11-28 11:54:04 UTC
Different entries between paste special dialog and icon.
Comment 7 niklas.nebel 2002-11-28 18:16:49 UTC
The "Paste Special" menu entry calls two different functions (and
dialogs), depending on the clipboard content. Independently of that,
the toolbox button always shows the list of available clipboard format
names. There's nothing wrong with that.

here's INCONSISTENCY which should be "fixed"

here's INCONSISTENCY which should be "fixed"

because the user doesn't know that these are 2 different functions if
they behave the same some time, so he will always use the handier
icon and never use the menu as I have done and therefore have mised
that functionality.

but I also like to be able to have that functionality (to select
whether just borders, text, background of a cell for example, if a
cell has been copied, is to be pasted) in the context menu or an
icon; but this idea I have forwarded in a different issue (i Think..).

I'll forward the issue to Falko. Maybe he has an idea.

Strictly seen you are right, Lars. There _are_ two different ways of
"Paste Special" even if they supposed to be the same.
For the moment I do not have an idea how to solve this issue since
both kinds are in need (while the menu driven one is also a legacy issue).

I cannot think of a solution here. Back to you.
Please close or create a solution.

so the 'paste' toolbar icon simply shows the clipboard content
formats available while the "paste special" menu function checks
whether the clipboard content is a Calc internal object or an
external one and offers an appropriate 'paste' dialogue.

Can't the 'paste' icon not simply do the same check and if it is
eg "a cell" which is in clipboard show "all, borders, background,
value, formula, ..." as entries of the paste icon (instead of the
different clipboard formats)? or open the same dialogue the menu
function does then?
Comment 13 falko.tesch 2003-10-27 16:11:31 UTC
AFAIK it can#T.

FT->NN: Am I right or wrong?
Comment 14 niklas.nebel 2003-10-31 17:20:55 UTC
Obviously, the dialog can't be shown in place of the drop-down list.
If the icon was to function like a normal toolbox icon in that case,
it would be even more confusing, because on pressing the mouse button
nothing would happen, as a normal icon executes its function on
releasing the button. Not a good idea, I think.
Comment 15 falko.tesch 2003-11-04 16:13:38 UTC
FT: I will close this one.
Why? There's no real solution for this issue.
On the other hand I do not think that this issue confuses a lot of
people but most will understand how to use these to same-named in
their right ways.
A good indicator for this is that
a) there are no votes (even not your own, Lars ;o) and
b) I haven't come across any same-sounding issue.
