All menus are missing and, combo boxes in tool bar are VERY thin with no text.

Greg,

you _surely_ want to give us information about your system, maybe your
display settings, maybe your installed and running programs, whatever!
Sorry, but what the heck do you expect from such an unspecific bug
description???

Greg, thanks for taking the time to post.

Does the problem still exist with OOo 1.0.1?

This is a long shot, but perhaps your issue is related to:

http://www.openoffice.org/FAQs/fontguide.html

In particular, you might want to take a look at the sections that 
deal with the application font or when the UI looks garbled.
