Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 41119
Suggestion for version numbering
Last modified: 2013-12-20 11:48:43 UTC
As of Now OOo uses Version numbering 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 etc. How about changing it to year version numbering like OpenOffice.org 2005 (Release 1, 2, 3 etc.) OpenOffice.org 2006 (Release 1, 2, 3 etc.) In this way an end user will instantly come to know how old/newer a particular version is. Versioning like 1.1.0, 1.1.4 etc. are more appealing to programmers and not to end users.

IMHO very good suggestion. 1. We don't need a three digit version number - we had 4.0.0 and 4.0.1 but not 4.0.2, 4.0.3 etc. 2. Current version number gives an impression of lag behind competing project - AOO 4.0.1 < LO 4.1.4 3. A year version number will give a realistic expectation to amount of updates per year.
