Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 39030
"Icons & Text" configuration in all bars makes buttons too large.
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:35:11 UTC
Right click on any bar and select "Configure...", then select "Icon & Text" from Content dropdown for any bar. Result is that buttons are now far too wide and all of them won't fit on screen, more likely necessitating a dropdown list. I've not seen this problem to such a degree in other programs (eg. Winzip, Internet Explorer, WordPerfect 6.1 etc.). I like using "Icon & Text" because remembering which icon does what can be very difficult because different programs can use different icons for the same function. I know that the user can simply move the cursor over a button to get a tooltip will pop up, but from an end user's viewpoint this is very tedious. It would be very nice to be able to know at a glance what a button does by reading a description, but having to scroll down through the buttons is also tedious. The solution would be first to use different terminology. Examples are: "Template" instead of "New Using Template", "Open" instead of "Open File", "Save As" instead of "Save Document As", "Preview" instead of "Page Preview", etc. All toggle buttons can be simplified by removing "On/Off" or "Show/Hide") and making the default button size smaller when using text. Next, the default button size when using text needs to be decreased. This problem is important enough to me that I went to the trouble of registering with OpenOffice.org in order to be able to suggest improvement in this area. I sincerely hope that you will give this recommendation some consideration.
