Description jepo 2004-11-08 14:03:12 UTC
A colleague detected a problem while copy+pasting multiple cells in writer
tables. The obvious effect of inserting a copied selection is None.

Procedure to reproduce:

* open new text doc
* insert a table, size eg. 8x8
* insert some content in first rows cells (say a-h - it's just observable copy
material)
* merge some cells (I doesn't seem to matter wether across or down)
* pick a single cell, copy and paste to rows with merged cells (this works)
* pick selection of cells (say, a1-a3), copy and paste into row without merged
cells (this works)
* try to paste to a row with merged cells (doesn't work)
* try to paste a vertical selection (eg. a1-b1) to a col with merged cells
(doesn't work)

Seems to be roughly independent on
 * length of selection (if more than one cell)
 * directionality of selected material (row or col selection)
 * row or col merging
 * distance of merged cell from insertion (reasonable values for writer table);
didn't try with LARGE tables.

Prolem detected with OO1.1.2 Win2K and confirmed with OO1.1.3 on a Gentoo Linux box.

Cheers
Jens

The bug appears to be still present in the OOo1.1.4 build. I had tested it on
Windows XP operating system, Intel Pentium 4. I can however paste a selection
(A1 – A3) but it doesn’t work if you select all cells and try to paste into a
row with merged cells. The problem also reveals a few other issues with tables’
copy and paste. Here are few other conditions that lead to a faulty effect.
Note that these behaviors are not consistent with the spreadsheet behavior.

Case A:
1. Start a new document and insert an 8 by 8 table
2. Insert numbers 1 to 8 into the first row.
3. Merge cells C3 and D3 (i.e. a horizontal merge)
4. Copy cells A1 to H1, and paste them into cells A3 to H3. Nothing will be
pasted (as the report indicates).
5. now merge B3 and B4 (i.e. a vertical merge)
6. insert numbers 1 to 8 in cells A1 to A8
7. Copy cells A1 to A8 and paste them into cells B1 to B7 (note that its only 7
cells in this column now). The cells will be pasted, and a row will be appended
to the end of the table.

Case B:
1. Start a new document and insert an 8 by 8 table
2. Insert numbers 1 to 8 into the first column
3. Merge cells C1 and C2 (i.e. a vertical merge)
4. Copy cells A1 and A2 then put the cursor into the merged C1 cell. Now paste
the copied content. The content will be pasted, but the content of A2 will be
pasted to the left (i.e. not in C2 but in B2).
5. Select cells C1 (the merged cell) and C2 (the one below it) and paste the
contents now. It will fill them in correctly.

Case C:
1. Start a new document and insert an 8 by 8 table
2. Insert numbers 1 to 8 into the first column.
3. Merge cells C1 and C2 then try to merge cells D2 and D3. Error message will
occur saying that it is “too complex to mergeâ€

Case E:
1. Start a new document and insert an 8 by 8 table
2. Insert numbers 1 to 8 into the first column.
3. Merge cells B3 and B4.
4. copy cells A3 and A4
5. Paste the content into C3 and C4 or D3 and D4 etc.. or even C4 and C5 or D4
and D5, (i.e. any column on the same rows with a merged cell in another
column), nothing will be pasted.
6. Try however to paste the content to C5 and C6. This would paste the right
content. This does not happen however with horizontal merge.

In reply to Spouh_r's instructions,

Using OOo 1.9.74 on Windows 2000 5.0.2195 SP4:

Case A - Confirmed. Step 4 fails. Step 7 appends a row to the table.

Case B - Confirmed. Step 4 failed, however the second cell was pasted into B3,
rather than B2.

Case C - Duplicate of issue 4032.

Case E - Confirmed. Probably closely related to Case A.

MRU->FME: copy e.g. cells A1-C1 to Clipboard and try to paste when cursor is
placed in cell A6.1.1 -> Writer won't do anything.

This bug is a real pain. I can't believe it's still in Writer.
