Description bht 2002-03-10 07:02:11 UTC
Unlike in a web browser or in StarOffice 5 with its URL bar, OpenOffice
applications do NOT have the capability to provide the unique file name of the
current document.

This is truly fundametal for all OpenOffice applications under all operating
systems.

This functionality should be added, without taking up the screen space as the
URL bar does. Such functionality would be an easy-to implement feature but it
would create a compelling advantage over other packages for intelligent office
software users.

Background:

This feature did exist (by mistake?) even in Windows 3.1 where the "Save As"
file dialog allowed the user to copy the complete file name to the clipboard.
With the clipboard content the user could then go away to other applications and
do "open" things such as paste the file name into their to-do list, use it in
file attachment dialogs of any email software or even use it in the file manager
to locate the directory of the file for maintenance.

Without this feature, working with may documents is a pain.
Nowadays users are fooled into thinking that all they can do with the current
document is what is available from the file menu in the "Send to..." options -
true to Microsoft's monopolistic prescriptions. Applications that are not
included in these hard-wired dialogs are downgraded to 2nd rate applications.

I am suggesting:
a) File|Sent to|Clipboard as Link
or
b) File|Copy Name to Clipboard
or
c) File|Create Shortcut/Link

c) Looks most attractive if combined with a small dialog, same as in Netscape
Navigator 4 (Right click on page/frame, then select "Create Shortcut"
This has the additional advantage that the creation of a shortcut on the desktop
can be easily avoided if not required, but the URL is avaliable for copying from
a simple text field in the dialog. I do NOT like the Internet Explorer way where
a shortcut is dumped on the desktop unconditionally. This forces the user to
minimise all applications and search for the shortcut on the desktop.

As an application example, OpenOffice documents provide functionality to link
documents together.
This functionality is only truly useful if users can get the link targets from
the documents themselves onto the clibboard without having to walk via the back
door through file dialogs to documents that are already open.

Hmm, the URL bar is in the toolbar again by default in 641/642, so the
filename *is* there for cutting and pasting. I think it was a little
buggy in the OpenOffice 641c, but should behave itself in the latest 642.

Fantastic. So it's a designed feature to show the URL of the document
in the top left corner. That's the way it should be.
Currently I can't see it in 641C because the list box is blank when I
open a document but I take your word for it that it is back in 642.
Many thanks!
