Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 31798
Number of characters - wrong count for German typewriter-teachers
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:38:26 UTC
The text Erwin is count -File -Properties -Statistic Number of characters : 5 For typewriting teachers in Germany the name Erwin is count with 6 characters, because to write the E, you have to push the Shift-button. Characters like !"§$%&/()=? or *;: are counted twice, because you have to push the shift-key as well. It would be very helpfull to have an additional count in the statistic. "German Typwriter count" or similar ;-) - BTW: Redmond's count is also wrong for german tywriter-teachers.
MRU->SBA: pls have a look. Could be a good thing for OO 2.0 IMO.
Just some notes: Imho these counts have to be displayed as distinct values. (And therefore this is rather an enhancement than a defect) The Number of characters will alwasy be the sam (no matter what keyboard layout you use). But the number of keystrokes will differ depending on the keyboard layout Example: Andrè (de_DE keyboard) 5 Chars, 8 keystrokes Andrè (de_CH keyboard) 5 Chars, 7 keystrokes and there might even be combinations impossible to count (you cannot type a ß on a swiss-german keyboard). I agree, that it should be an enhancement and that it is not a defect. As I said: Teacher who teach typewriting in Germany has this problem. They must count the keystrokes - and a upper-case character need a shift... The german pupil, learning typewriting with 10 fingers, don't change the keyboard-layout. ;-)
