Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 3151
OO far too slow to start up in Linux
Last modified: 2002-03-14 20:03:27 UTC
I know I've submitted this before, but I think it really needs to be addressed !! So I'm going to be daring and raise it again, and I consider it a bug ! By default using ./soffice puts you into writer, so I'll consider this to be a normal start up. There are a lot of same model of PC where I work, so I'll use this as a baseline : PIII 600MHz, 256Mb RAM, 16Mb ATI Rage RL graphics card, 12Gb single hard disc. Timings: Window$ - sub 5 seconds Linux - 35 seconds !!! Repeatable: Yes Surely OO on Linux can be made to start faster ?
If this is any help, an applet has been created for Gnome that really speeds up start time, "open office quick starter applet. The person that created is Kumaran Samthanan at Kumaran@alumni.stanford.org you can get the applet at sourceforge.Maybe it could be intergrated in OO.
Unfortunately I am unable to find either the applet or the author on SourceForge or FreshMeat :-(

All variants (both rpm versions and a build from source) just throw and bomb out with no explanation !
don't blame writer for the starting-time, blame framework ;->
marking it as duplicate to get rid of it... PS: your questions regarding the quickstarter-application for gnome should be adressed to the developers of said application *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 1585 ***
