Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 3116
"Christian" and the thesarus
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
When queried with certain words, the openoffice thesarus all to often suggests the word "Christian" at the top or near the top of the list. Here are just a few of the words that when entered into the thesarus bring up the word "Christian": proper, good, true, right, moral. It seems like there is a religios bias programmed into the thesarus and though I am not neccesarily un-christian, I believe that this bias should be removed from the thesarus just because the word is very rarely appropriate to use. Thank you, RA
TL->SBA: Please check and pass it on to Kevin if necessary.
Reassigned to Michael.
I can confirm the description. But at this point I am not fmailiar enough with the usage of expressions like this. Kevin, what do you think about the accuracy of the Thesaurus output in this case. It is much different from the output of the modules StarOffice uses.
Hi, Give me a break! I am actually an atheist. There is no bias, the thesaurs was generated from a publicly available word list that exists. No editing for religion was ever done. Christian comes first in that is is capitalized so it appears first in the sort order. Since the term "Christian charity" is an example of where the term Christian is used as an adjective and not a noun. It this use the terms "proper, good, true, right, moral" might all be used so the synonyms are circular and work properly. If you want to add words to expand the thesaurus please submit them in some structured text format as an attachment and I will try to add them is they can be verified in a real thesaurus. As such, I will NOT be editing the publicly available word list to remove words because they will get me in as much or more hot water as having them in the first place (I can hear it now ... the atheist removed the word "Christian" from the en_US thesaurus! That would sink us overnight/ Please remember this is a en_US thesaurus and the term "Christian" is really used as both a noun and an adjective and when used as an adjective, it has exactly the meanings you listed above. Again, if you would like to add to the thesaurus to add your particular religion as both an adjective and a noun and can show me a thesaurus entry that supports it, I would be happy to add them too.
