Description michaelfavia 2004-04-08 22:51:55 UTC
I have a couple of suggestions for improving the usability of the OO drawing
application and i will try to present them as lucidly as possible. I am not
going to explain why i think these things should be this way unless requested
(when i will happily explain my reasoning) because i think that most are rather
self explanatory. For the purposes of this enhancement container will mean any
box, ellipse, polygon, or free formed line.

I would like to be able to resize any container based on the size requirements
of the text contained within. For example the container would proportionally
scale as the text requirements grew. The already seems possible if you choose to
use a text box instead of a normal box but the options are grayed out when you
return to the dialog with a regular box selected. Maybe we can commonize the
code for resizing and apply it to any container.

I think that the “slant and corner radius” and the “rotation” tabs should be
available under styles editing. They don't have as much to to with position as
they have to do with appearance and being able to auto rotate based on styles
would be fantastic improvement.

I would like to be able to add text to a polygon and have it behave like text
added to any other container (see above definition). Currently the functionality
of this in particular is a little ambiguous. You cant double click to enter text
but if you click on the text tool while you have it highlighted a carat appears
in the center.

I would like to be able to separate the alignment (angle) of the text and the
angle of the container should i choose to do so. Leave them joined by default
just allow me to rotate the text should i choose. I think this option should go
under styles as well.

Well thats it. In recap i would like a common container/text interaction that is
configurable through the use of styles (and manually if you like to waste time
:)). I would like to be able to rotate the contained text and the container
independently of each other but in relation to the object original orientation.
Please accept my great thanks for an otherwise intuitive and increasingly useful
application. With these changes i see no place for the excruciating exercise
that is creating diagrams using Dia.

This seems to be more an enhancement than a defect....
Reassigned to Bettina.
