Description breetai21 2004-04-05 14:12:55 UTC
I was wondering when mouseover features (play a sound, highlight an icon) may
be added to Impress. Currently, any mouseover feature from a PowerPoint file
opened with Impress becomes a "on mouse click" effect.

Here are some additional information about wanted 'mouse over' feature.

In Presentation (Impress) the actions on objects cannot be initiated with passing mouse over them.

Used software:
- Microsoft Office PowerPoint: 2000, 2007, 2010
- OpenOffice Presentation (Impress): OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 OOO330m20 (Build: 9567), OO0-dev 3.4.0 DEV300m106 (Build: 9582)

Microsoft Office PowerPoint has the feature 'Action' which allows you to assign different actions to button, picture or clip art. Those actions include:
- navigate through presentation (first, last, next, previous ...),
- navigate to defined slide
- go to end of presentation
- open URL
- open other PowerPoint presentation
- open other file
- run program
- run macro
- do some action on object (OLE)
- play sound
- highlight the object
An action can be initiated by clicking on the object or passing the mouse over the object during presentation.

How to use this feature in PowerPoint:
- PowerPoint 2000 - select object and look for 'Action Settings' in context menu or under 'Slide Show' main menu
- PowerPoint 2007/2010 - select object and on the Insert tab, in the Links group, click Action

OpenOffice Presentation (Impress) named this feature 'Interaction' and it is limited to mouse click.
Comparing to PowerPoint, Presentation (Impress) has few actions less (highlight the object, do action on object).

How to use this feature in Presentation (Impress):
- select object and look for 'Interaction' on context menu, on 'Slide Show' main menu or on Drawing toolbar

The original request for this enhancement stated that 'any mouseover feature from a PowerPoint file opened with Impress becomes a "on mouse click" effect'.
This statement is correct, but I think that is good to mention that some of the actions will be 'converted' to 'No action' like:
- do some action on object (OLE)
- highlight the object
- run macro

Attached are some .ppt documents to play with:
- first with mix of mouse click and mouse over actions
- second with only mouse click actions
- third with only mouse over actions

This enhancement is not only about feature compatibility between PowerPoint and Presentation (Impress) - to have or not 'mouse over'.
It is also the question of what level of feature compatibility to supply.

To be considered - what can have impact on 'actions', the way 'actions' are interpreted:
- open PowerPoint documents in Presentation (Impress) and other way around
- save PowerPoint documents to Presentation (Impress) documents with PowerPoint application or with Presentation (Impress) application
- save Presentation (Impress) as PowerPoint documents with Presentation (Impress) application or with PowerPoint application
- convert PowerPoint documents (currently works only for .ppt documents) with OpenOffice Wizard - Document Converter
- understand how both application can deal with non-existing program (or different path) or file
- understand what rules are applied when executing 'security' content: macro, opening program
