It would make more sense and be more intuitive for the default My Documents path to 
be the user's home directory, rather than 
~/OpenOffice.org/user/work.  

I use Linux, but I suppose this is an issue for other UNIX-like systems as well.

This behaviour has allready been changed and now the default documents path is the user's home directory. 
"Now" means the actual internal versions which will be the base for upcoming OO-versions.
