Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 1681
File Locking/Sharing
Last modified: 2001-10-30 15:11:56 UTC
There is a major defect within Openoffice 6.3.8, whereby users can open a particular file any number of times without it being reduced to Read Only, or refusing access to users. I feel that this is a major feature if Openoffice is to be used as part of an office infrastructure, as we currently do. I have been made aware that file-sharing slowed down NFS, but feel that this comes second to data integrity.
This affects ALL applications => changed from "word processor" to "framework" Reassigned to Thorsten.
Due to some problems with Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.7 in accordance with Linux NFS 2.0 (Office hangs), the file-locking is switched off. It can be switched on by setting SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING 1 in the soffice-startscript or by setting this varible via setenv before starting Openoffice. In newer versions of staroffice this option is mentioned in the readme-file. For openoffice the readme-file will undergo major changes and will mention this file-locking handling in the future.
Behaviour will be mentioned in readme-files of upcomming OO-versions. Not a bug, but a missing description. Therefore closed !
I have tried the variable that has been reccomended, but it does not seem to work. Is there anything else that I need to do/look at???
When using a 6.0 just have a look at the soffice - script. You`ll find a line reading "# SAL-ENABLE-FILE-LOCKING=1" Remove the # in front of this line and in front of the next line, reading "# export SAL-ENABLE-FILE-LOCKING" If both lines are missing, just add them to the script (case sensitive) ! This feature is for enabling file locking for multiple users (network-installation) or when using different staroffice/openoffice versions. When a staroffice 5.2 is also in use, there must be the above mentioned entries in its script file (replace SAL by STAR !!!). I`ve testet this feature again today and it works fine. Upcoming versions will have a correct discription in it`s readme - files !
