Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 16261
kerning for printer-resident fonts
Last modified: 2014-02-20 11:33:11 UTC
This is about printing again. StarOffice 5.2 had a 'feature' in which it refused to kern printer-resident fonts; this was supposedly to enhance wysiwygness. I can't remember whether this was only for type1 or (maybe) also for truetype fonts. It looks as if OpenOffice (1.1b2, at least under Windows 9x) still adheres to this point of view. I would argue that if a softfont is installed on the host (whether truetype or type1), and this has kerning info available, than that kerning info could and should be used to enhance the printed appearance. There is still no need to download the font to the printer (if the system is so configured), only the relative positioning of the glyphs can be improved by taking the kerning into account. This is what professional applications like RagTime do.
