Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 15265
default character style for bullet should be None
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:30:57 UTC
When a list is automatically generated by typing hyphen, tab, text, and enter. The current default character type is "Bullets". The result is that the hyphen-bullet is not proportional to the font. Type your list font size 72 pt and the bullet is still a 12 pt hyphen. It is hard for the user to figure out how to fix this. (See bug 6439.) This could be fixed by changing the character style for an automatically generated bulleted list to "None". This could spare some user frustration.
This is related to several other issues: See Issue 1210 re failure to scale bullet according to font size. See Issue 9437 re changing the bullet type. Comments to these previous issues make it clear that the behavior is as expected and not a bug. As this issue requests default set to "none", changing to RFE. Tam

The current solution is not intuitive/logical at all (still in 2.0.3) and should really be changed. I had the problem initially described by bulbul in issue 15265 with bullets staying at a fixed font size while the paragraph size changed, and I was unable to change this behavior even following help pages. Astonishingly I also had some character styles that adopted the font size from the underlying paragraph styles without problems. I just couldn't find the setting that would explain the different behavior. In a discussion forum I was told the solution finally. The problem is like pointed out by bulbul that there is no way to set the character style font size to "none". The current solution is to press the "Standard" button on the font tab of the character style dialog. This button assigns a 12pt font according to the dialog settings, but in reality the font size is taken from the paragraph style, i.e., the 12pt setting stays without effect. Furthermore, I consider this not as an enhancement but as a defect, as the dialog settings and the real behavior differ. One should also add "none" options to the other character style settings (font, text style [standard, bold, italic, both], etc., also on different tabs) to get the behavior shown.
It is actually quite simple (though not intuitive) to set the character style to None, just do this: 1. Choose menu Format/Bullets and Numbering 2. Choose Options tab 3. Change Character Style to None But having said that, I disagree that this is a satisfactory solution. Setting the default character style for bullets to None solves the problem to a certain extent, but is still problematic because the bullet point size usually needs to be smaller in font size than the rest of the line!! This is especially visible at large font sizes (eg 72), where having set the character style of the bullet point to None, the size of the bullet point is ridiculously large. I believe the solution must be that the bullet point font size needs to configurable to be a percentage of the size of the font of the line on which it appears. I checked and this seems to be the default intuitive behaviour seen in that other wordprocessor that is still quite popular.
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
Bullet character style is still assigned, but empty. So bullet grows fix font size. Has been fixed for OOo 3.0 or so.
