I have attached a word document containing a table. When I open this in OOO the 
table is pretty messed up.

Yup. in Word, there is a second pandscape page with a table filling 
it. In OOo, there s just one hideously scrunched table row on that 
page.

Old problem. See (and subscribe to) issue #4746 to keep informed on
progress.
Not a problem of the MS Word import. Writer's table ability lack of
breaking a cell, which is longer than a page, to the next page.
A whole concept change will be necessary for this.
