Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 14205
Limit on the number of external spreadsheet references
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:40:38 UTC
I created a spreadsheet that referenced ALOT of external sheets. Enough, in fact, that I exceeded the program limit of 256 sheets. I was not aware of the limit, and received the #NAME? error message throughout most of the document. In researching the problem I found that... "A Calc doc is limited to 256 sheets. Each referenced external sheet creates a hidden sheet in the doc, containing the cached data of the external sheet. If the total count of your visible and hidden sheets reaches 256, no more links to other files are possible. You can check the number of your sheets in the status bar." It seems that there is no warning message to indicate this to the user. Is it possible to add this so that the user does not think it is a bug ?

I confirm that this problem still happens in OOo 2.4.0.
I would also suggest that the fact that the user gets no warning when she reaches the limit be considered a bug. The enhancement would be to increase the limit.
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
