copy of starting three chapters of book

Now there are two problems that are close enough related that I think they should be considered one (combined) issue, but if they aren't I can open a new ticket.

$$ Background to both problems

I am writing a book where after the table of contents the book switches to a left/right header. (Variables in the example below are placed *inside asterisks*.)

Left page header consists of "my name - book name".
Right page header consist of "Chapter *chapter number* - *chapter name*".
Left header is OK. Right header appears as "Chapter - *chapter name*", but only on the page after header 1 is defined, it retains the old chapter name until the next page.

$$ First problem
$$ Issue

So there are two problems with the header:

1. Chapter number will not display at all.
2. Chapter name does not change until the page after the Heading 1 entry.

The first makes no sense. The second is odd. When I'm setting the new chapter name, presumably I might want to display it on that page's header if that page happens to be the side that displays chapter names. This shouldn't be that hard, I mean, Word Perfect 8 for Windows 95 got this right 25 years ago.

$$ Second problem
$$ Background

1. At the start of chapter one, the variable *chapter* is set to 1.
2. At the start of each subsequent chapter, the variable *chapter* is set to the value *chapter+1* . Then in the text "Chapter " *chapter* are displayed, and it's correct. On the next line *chapter name* is defined through a Heading 1 paragraph. As a result, *chapter name* is defined as the appropriate heading value. This also means I can simply copy any chapter header except chapter 1, paste it on another page, change the heading 1 value, and the new chapter and all subsequent chapters are automatically renumbered.

$$ Issue

While the chapter number does show when I place it in the text at the start of each chapter, I cannot get it to display on the header. If I enable fields there is a marker there, but it never displays anything.

I have cut down a piece of my document to show the first two chapter and the first page of the third. It's a bit long at 14 pages but it shows all of the problems, how the chapter name doesn't change in the header until the next page, and the chapter number never displays in the header at all.

Thank you for your assistance.

I just realized I may be describingwhat the left page and right page backwards, i.e. the author and title appear on the header of the right page, but the behavior is otherwise as described.
