case study (4 language examples)

At first I intended to flag my issue as "Language" - Polish. After some test,
due to differences in English, French and German versions, I decided to mark it as "UI".

Consider three first items of menu "Edit": Undo, Redo, Repeat and their equivalents on the toolbar.

If user makes changes in document (any of AOO components), relevant information is displayed:

- on toolbar (as help text if the mouse cursor is above corresponding items' icon)

- in "Edit" menu after the name of menu item

for example:

Undo: New Paragraph Ctrl + Z
Redo: Typing: 'Dwd' Ctrl + Y
     Repeat: Paste Clipboard Ctrl+Shift+Y

Thus one could expect that general format of information is as follows:

         <Name of Command><:>< ><Name of operation>

That's true ONLY for English version. French and German versions demonstrate variations like missing space, additional space or missing colon. Lack of uniform approach is obvious yet acceptable.
See attached image to grasp the idea.

On the other hand Polish version definitely represents the WORST case for two reasons:

1. no separating characters at all
Just look at example below (on the left - Polish, on the right - English):

   CofnijWklejSchowek Undo: Paste Clipboard

   PowtórzWprowadzanie: 'Dwd' Redo: Typing: 'Dwd'

2. inconsistency
"Glued" information occurs in every AOO component (Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, Math) with
   one surprising exception within Base.

Tabele > Utwórz projekt tabeli... Tables > Create Table in Design View...

   where information is not "glued".

(see attached image - examples in Polish are show on the right side)

No clue what to think of that difference.

All these strings are defined in the translation.

As we are currently working on AOO 4.2.0 there will be no translation updates for 4.1.x.

It would be great if you could test your findings against the current translations:

I corrected the missing colon in German (Wiederholen: ) now, thanks!

The extra space before the colon in French is correct:

Note:

I now added the missing space (after the colon) in French.

However, all these changes will not become visible in the binaries until we have a current export committed back into the code.

So keep an eye on my test builds, I will refresh them every now and then.

Thanks for your thanks!

You shall know that Russian version has no spaces just colon. For example:

  Отменa:Вставить or Undo:Paste Clipboard

If Russians are concerned they may report this to Bugzilla, I don't mind...

I already corrected that for several other languages...

Thank you for finding this!

Fixed in Pootle for Polish, German, French and several other languages.
