Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 127353
Label "Outline" is used for 2 different functions (EN)
Last modified: 2017-03-11 16:08:10 UTC
In Writer there are 2 different functions labelled with the same word "Outline". 1. Tools → Outline Numbering… This function uses special paragraph templates (mostly headings) for a numbering of chapters in a document/book. This numbering can be used to create a TOC. Could it be Chapter Numbering…? In german (original StarOffice): Kapitelnummerierung… http://dict.leo.org/englisch-deutsch/kapitel 2. Format → Bullets and Numbering…: (Tab) Outline This is a special form of numbering which is independent from the used paragraph templates. In german (original StarOffice): Gliederung http://dict.leo.org/englisch-deutsch/gliederung IMO different functions should have different labels.

For me both functions belong to the same topic: To apply and format the numbering in an outline: - Tools - Outline Numbering --> to apply the defined numbering to an outline in the document - Format - Bullets and Numbering, Tab Outline --> to change the formatting of the used outline Sure, the functionality is not strict separated from each other, its a bit overlapping, but still. 2. Outline numbering is a very common term in the English language. Therefore I wouldn't suggest to rename a thing just because it's confusing in another language. Suggestion: The (maybe) best we could do is to change it to: Tools - Outline/Chapter numbering in order to avoid to totally confuse people that expect the wording that was used since years and which is common in other programs, too.
Same thing in french where "chapitre" (chapter) word is used for this menu. But I'm not a native english speaker and I don't know if this new item is understandable.
