Description Paul Haneline 2015-01-23 10:02:28 UTC
Can not open ODS or may be all types of documents from a public or may be shared folder.

I put a document folder in a public folder so I could share the file "of course on at a time", but when I open the file remotely, OpenOffice opened it right up.

Everytime I try opening the file locally in the public folder I get the popup window and then it goes away and the program never opens up. This is tryin to click on a document and have it open up the program from the outside.

Having the main menu up but still trying to open the document from outside the program, I get nothing.

I can open it within the program and clicking open in the main menu the document opens just fine.

I can open it remotely outside of OpenOffice but never locally in a public folder.

I have 2 computers, one with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 both having this problem.

What did you call "public folder"?
Could you provide more details about this like a step-by-step procedure to reproduce (the simpler will be the better)?

Ok for some reason my response didn't go through so I'll try again.

Go to Computer in the start menu of Windows 7 and then at the bottom left of the window that popped up and click the local username that is undered Network then User and then Public and any file you put there will be sharable from any computer connected to the Network. Putting a file in there and then trying to open a file from your local computer window OpenOffice will not open, "but if it's a remote username it will open". This is all without opening OpenOffice first.

Public folders are included in all versions of Windows.

I don't reproduce what you described.
AOO works fine with shared folders (SMB, NFS, CIFS, etc).
It sounds like a right or privilege issue with Windows OS.

First, ask this kind of question on the support forum or mailing user list:
http://www.openoffice.org/support/index.html
If other users can confirm your problem, bug report is welcome.

I have 2 computers and both are admins and Openoffice is doing it to both versions of Windows 7 and 8.1. I had "no problems" with "previous versions" of Openoffice until I updated.

Now I just install openoffice on a brand new computer of Windows 7 pro and installed Openoffice v4.1.1 and still can't open it from the shared folder under Public folder, even when Openoffice is already running. I know it uses java, so could it be a java v8 31 32 or 64 bit and I even have java 7 75 64 bit that I do need as well so don't ask me to uninstall.

Did you try to open the file locally? Because oping it remotely still works.
