Footnotes not formatting correctly

Created attachment 84368 [details] Fottnote format error When opening a document after saving it, and the document has footnotes, footnotes have returns added after the footnote number and before the text. See the attached image. This throws off the formatting of documents.
Rather than a screenshot, you should provide directly your ODT file.

Created attachment 84373 [details] ODT with correct footnote I don't know how you did create these footnotes but I don't reproduce. I open Footnote error.odt, delete first footnote anchor and recreate it. Footnote is inserted at the end of a page with correct number and text. Close and reopen this ODT, you can see no problem.
I simply use the pulldown menus to insert a footnote. I put them in as I am typing in the text into the document. Don't be so dismissive just because you can't get it to break. It is a problem with the program. It happens on all of the documents that I have written in the past 6 months or more and I have just now gotten to the point of re-editing the footnotes is becoming tedious.
You have attached a DOC file. Did you work with this alien format by default?
Yes, I have to because of the software my editor uses. I need to send it to her in .doc format. As a note, I did check Neooffice and that program does not exhibit the same issue.
I tried to reproduce this bug but was unsuccessful. I will describe below what I did so that in future attempts to reproduce this bug one could exercise other untried conditions. Configuration: Open Office Writer 4.1.1; Mac OS X 10.10 and 10.9; Microsoft Word 2010 on a Windows 7 machine I tried this sequence of steps: 1. Had some text in the document; 2. I entered a footnote; 3. Continued editing the doc; 4. Saved the text document; 5. Closed the app; 6. Reopened the text document. Here are some variations of the above mentioned steps that I covered with my tests: • I used both new files and the ones provided as examples in attachments. For the new files I had text entered manually and text copied from another source (I thought that maybe metadata could cause the failure); • I entered the footnote from the menu Insert>Footnote/Endnote; I also added the Insert toolbar and used the Insert Footnote/Endnote button; • I varied the length of the footnote and the settings affecting it; • I entered the footnote by first placing the cursor at the end of the word and by selecting the entire word with the space that precedes it; • I saved with the Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) as well as Microsoft Word 95 (.doc). I can imagine such files being opened on a Windows machine with Microsoft Word by the publisher, edited and sent back to you, you open and edit them with Writer. I thought that this could cause the returns being added. So I performed some more steps: 7. I sent the documents to a Windows machine; 8. I edited them with Microsoft Word; 9. I sent them back on Mac; 10. I opened the docs. In all my tests the footnotes were correctly displayed. Furthermore, I used Neooffice for comparison. My investigation was limited by the fact that the free edition tool doesn't save changes in a text document. I wanted to check if there is a corrupt data problem or a display one related to the footnotes. I opened the documents attached and the footnote also are incorrectly displayed. This could eliminate the possibility of a display problem, but leaves the one of corrupted date still open. Additional information that might help reproduce the bug: 1. Were the text documents created with a previous version of Writer? 2. How do you use Neooffice as a reference oracle? 3. What format do you save the file as? Are they edited in another word editor and then maybe sent back to you?
1. Were the text documents created with a previous version of Writer? Yes, it takes me months and sometimes years to complete a book. 2. How do you use Neooffice as a reference oracle? I opened the file in Neooffice to see if the problem showed up there as well. I did not resave the document. 3. What format do you save the file as? Are they edited in another word editor and then maybe sent back to you? I save the file in .doc format so my editor can put in comments. Then when editing I open her file and my file and I edit my file.

Configuration Computer A OS: Windows 10 Home OO Version: 4.1.1/4.0.1 MS Word: Microsoft Professional 2013 Plus Computer B OS: Mac OS X, 10.9.5 OO Version: 4.1.1/4.0.1/3.4.0 Bug Summary - Footnote format incorrect when reopening document Bug Description When user tries to open a file includes footnotes, there’re some spaces between the footnote number and the text in certain footnotes. The report didn’t give steps to replicate the bug, but provided files that has the problem. I opened those files and there really are some spaces between the footnote number and text. However, every attempt trying to replicate the bug was failed when I tried to create a new file and make the problem happen again. I’ll give my best to describe the tests I performed and make them a reference to the testers who are going to investigate the problem later. Basic Steps 1.Input some texts in the document; 2.Let the cursor stop at the place where I want to insert a footnote; 3.Click the “Insert” Button on the top and select “Footnote/Endnote” in the dropdown menu; 4.Click “Ok” in the pop-up window, the footnote is generated underneath the page; 5.Input some text in the footnote; 6.Click the “File” Button on the top and select “Save” in the dropdown menu to save the document; 7.Close the word processor - Writer; 8.Reopen the document. For more detailed information about the follow-up tests, please refer to the attachment. Explanation I tried a lot of ways to replicate the bug, including changing position of the footnotes, using more than one footnotes on one page, inputting longer text in the footnotes, changing the method to create a footnote, importing a picture in the footnotes, saving the document in another format, using different configuration to create and open the files, etc. Most important, I installed different versions of OO and tested the problem under many different software configurations, using an Apple laptop and a Windows Laptop, which gives more inputs to the bug report.
