Just tried with Win7 and a draw doc, sent to myself, all works well, no problems found.

That is interesting Armin, it could be that it is only affecting Windowsa XP at this time. I just Tried again with a draw document and a spread sheet and recieved the same error. If I uninstall the 4.1.0 RC4 and re-install 4.0.1 all works as it should.

The windows settings has no effect to the email function in AOO, IMO.
The email configuration has to be done in Tools-Options-OpenOffice Writer-Mail Merge

jolatt;

In my experience the Windows settings for default e-mail client have always had an effect on the file->Send functions. I have never in the over 10 years I have been using OpenOffice ever set the mail-merge settings in writer and have never had a problem using the File->Send functions until now. I just set those in v4.1.0 and they had no effect what so ever on the problem. It still tells me that it cannot find a functioning e-mail program. I have restored v4.0.1 and it sends flawlessly with no properties set in Tools->Options->OpenOffice Writer->Mail Merge.

Please test, whether the mail client is properly registered. For example start WordPad and write mailto:users@openoffice.apache.org. This should give a clickable text. Click on it. Does Thunderbird open? Or look into the registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail whether Thunderbird is listed with the correct DLLPath. In Thunderbird itself make sure, that it sets itself as default email client.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail shows Thunderbird DLLPath as C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\mozMapi32_inuse.dll

Thunderbird is set to check that it is set as default at start-up.

I have a writer document that has mailto: links in it and v4.1.0 calls thunderbird with a blank message to the address set in the link with no problem.

So it seems to be a special Windows XP problem, because for Windows 7 it works for me as for Armin. We need someone to test on Windows XP.

From version 4.0 to 4.1 some Mozilla parts has been removed, because they are unsave. That might cause the difference between the both AOO versions.

Tried an interesting experiment. Installed Seamonkey and set it as default e-mail client and send as works fine with v4.1.1. I then set Thunderbird as the default e-mail client and send as still called Seamonkey to send the e-mail. I then completely uninstalled Seamonkey and again AOO says it cannot find a valid e-mail configuration. I then re-installed Seamonkey this time importing my entire Thunderbird profile and AOO v4.1.1 send as calls the Seamonkey e-mail client and sends the document as an attachment.

What I find most interesting is that AOO appears to ignore Thunderbird entirely if it sees Seamonkey is installed even though Thunderbird is registered as the default e-mail client it stills calls Seamonkey.
