Description reneb 2003-02-23 02:48:22 UTC
When importing Microsoft Word documents that have mathematical formulas, the
math type is incorrect and uneditable. These are formulas originally entered
into Word using Equation Editor.
1) Open Ooo and import Word document originally created in Mac Word 2001.
2) Document imports and all seems well.
3) The math formulas are highlighted as boxes, but
4) the contents are incorrect (some symbols are wrong)
5) the contents cannot be edited - instead the box is treated as a graphic.

I tried to first save the Word document as .rtf and other formats to see if this
resolved the issue, but no luck. I would be happy to provide you with a copy of
the file in question.

thanks,
rene

I would be happy to send you a sample document to show you the problem.

I sent a document <reneb.doc> that illustrates the problem

Comment 5 prgmgr 2003-06-18 16:12:32 UTC
From issue 11178:

When I create an Microsoft Equation 3.0 object I got wrong
characters (boxes) in place of some
mathematical symbols:
plus, minus signs, center dot, etc.

These characters use by
default system font "Symbol".
When I change the font of symbols in the Equation
editor's
styles dialog I got normal appearance.

I use OpenOffice.org 1.0.1 (1.0.1) with
Russian localization.
Windows 2000 SP2 English.

Also I've got the same problem on
Russian Windows XP SP1 box.

I think it can be a temporary solve if patch symbol.ttf.
Comment 6 prgmgr 2003-06-18 16:14:23 UTC
The attached document has problems with fonts in 1.0.3.1.

In 1.1 Beta 2 has resolved the font issue, but the layout of the
equations is incorrect.

Symbols are often spaced right on top of each other.
Comment 7 h.ilter 2003-06-19 13:54:49 UTC
Reassigned to MRU
Comment 8 michael.ruess 2003-06-27 08:52:40 UTC
The problem Gordon (prgmgr) described, is already fixed in OO 1.1 Beta.
But there's still another problem, that the ratios of the symbols
inside the object are not correct.
Comment 9 michael.ruess 2003-06-27 09:05:58 UTC
MRU->MBA: This seems to be a problem with the handling of OLE objects.
During import the Assertion "Error: X-Skalierung im Mtf" from
\so3\source\inplace\outplace.cxx comes (and als for "Y-Skalierung").
Comment 10 michael.ruess 2003-06-27 09:06:17 UTC
Changed Target to OO 2.0
Comment 11 Mathias_Bauer 2003-06-30 10:16:17 UTC
The assertion warns about a possible restriction in our metafile
format. I'm not sure if this is still valid, but besides that the
problem seems to be in the metafile.
Comment 12 sven.jacobi 2003-07-08 18:18:12 UTC
I will try to fix the Issue you are describing in your fourth point.
Because the Document was created on a Mac, the OLE representation
graphic is a pict metafile instead of a WMF graphic (as it the case on
Windows). I will check our pict filter.

The problem with uneditable MathOLE should be addressed in another
issue: In general the MathType should be editable if you are having
the corresponding server application available. This is the fact on my
pc (Windows), so I have no problems to edit the OLE.
Maybe there are general OLE problems existing on Mac OS, then of
course a single issue should be written to "fa@openoffice.org".

But have in mind that activating the option:"tools/load-save/Microsoft
Office/MathType to StarOfficeMath" tries to convert all MathType OLE
objects into StarOffice Math objects. If you have this option enabled
try to deactivate it, otherwise it will fail because of missing
support for version 3 MathType objects, therefore a feature request
needs to be written.

"According to the OpenOffice.org roadmap
(http://tools.openoffice.org/releases) this issue was retargeted to
OOo Later."
Comment 15 guido.pinkernell 2003-10-20 10:07:13 UTC
In a comment by Sven it was said here that importing MathType formulas
could fail because of lacking support of MathType 3 formulas. While
this Issue is about OOo 1.0.1, Mac OS, I have filed another one with a
detailed review on similar problems relating to the actual OOo 1.1.0
on Win and Linux OS.
If it´s a duplicate, please close.

This is still an issue with OpenOffice.org 2.1 as various items are displayed in
a diamond shaped area with a question mark in them.
This may be a font issue that can be resolved with import and setup of the
appropriate font.

This issue still exists in v 3.1, at least in Aqua. I have a Word 2000
document, which I plan to post when it becomes public, with Equation Editor 3
objects that don't display properly, to say the least.
