In a new Calc doc, go to second sheet, open "Define Database Range" dialog,
enter a name, enter a 2D reference (e.g. A1:B2), OK

-> The database range is created for the first sheet, not the current sheet.

Using mouse works as expected (this is the common use case) -> can be fixed later
