Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 100494
"Less options" should be "fewer options" in Find and Replace dialog
Last modified: 2009-04-20 18:25:13 UTC
From the Ubuntu bug report: " 1. Open Writer 2. Press Ctrl-F 3. Press "More Options" 4. Regard. In a word-processing application, basic grammatical errors are particularly embarrassing. " Confirmed on official OOo 3.0.1. I'm certainly no grammar expert, but perhaps the user is correct?
More details about the issue from the original bug submitter: see Wiktionary; "The difference between less and fewer is that the former refers to an amount, while the latter refers to a numbered quantity of undivided items". Without this distinction, a whole mountain of precision is lost. Consider as a topical example the difference between the two phrases "less documented libraries" and "fewer documented libraries". The former implies that there are "libraries" whose documentation is lacking, whereas the latter implies that there are a smaller number of "documented libraries". To lose the usage of "fewer" would be to create an ambiguity: when discussing "less documented libraries", it would be unknown whether the documentation was lacking, or whether there were fewer libraries. Naturally, neither of those situations are desirable, but it's always nice to know what people are talking about!
@ sba: please have a look.
