PHP-script to generate Impress-like web presentations none

Description discoleo 2006-06-06 14:51:41 UTC
I have put a priority 2, NOT because it needs to be fixed immediately, but
because it needs a major redesign and rethinking of OOo Impress (likely to have
a great influence on many users and back-compatibility).

There are some strong limitations of classical presentation programs (like
OpenOffice Impress and MS Power-Point).

LIMITATIONS OF CLASSICAL PRESENTATION PROGRAMS
* need for proprietary program to view presentation
* NO WEB pages (OOo)/ proprietary HTML (Power Point)
* rigid layout: designed exclusively for a fixed screen size, while monitors
and browser sizes vary widely => for a web presentation)
* primary concern with layout over content
* NO multiple language support (for 2 languages you write virtually 2
presentations)
* lack of functionality - NOT comparable to web possibilities

I have seen recently a number of presentations saved as graphics and put on the
web. Why save as a rigid picture and why loose all the functionality of the web?
The web is a dynamic medium, and non of the clasic programs recognizes this.

I have written a simple php-script that generates power-point-like web pages.
Please note, this is NOT a request to implement a simple feature into OOo (like
just saving html-pages, multiple slides per view, or some additional
functionality, which my script supprots), BUT it goes more deeply into the problem:

To make html-presentations and use the possibilities of the web: web browser
virtually on every computer (or save it in some xml-format with simple plugins
for mozilla or other web-browsers)

IS THERE A FUNCTION FOR IMPRESS IN THE FUTURE?
Of course. You write the presentation with it, BUT view it in a web browser.

I have opened a new project on sourceforge.net (WebAPrez, still in review phase,
therefore I append here the php-script). It is best viewed with Mozilla. Read
the readme for further details.

If you think, you can help, feel free to contact me. I am looking for many
program developers. This pre-alpha release is fully functional, but needs a
rewrite from ground up. I also hope, that the OOo developers recognize the
potential of a web-presentation and will rethink the development of Open Office
Impress.

Kind regards

discoleo

Reassigned.

I have also filed a feature request at Mozilla, to implement some
presentation-like functionality in the web-browser:

Issue: Bug #340519

I was recently taught that
Impress most definitely outputs to HTML, and
very nicely at that
Indeed! It was my fault. I always tried to Save As..., but as hardly I tried,
there was NO html option. Many thanks to Dallas Ray Smetter for the correction
(on a different forum).

Nevertheless, I still believe that there should be more emphasis on the web and
web-technologies and therefore warrants a major rethinking, e.g.:
* no fixed layouts (the web is a dynamic medium; no fixed resolution)
* more interactivity: web-presentations should be highly interactive
* ease layout design (modereately complex layouts still necessitate a lot of
user input and no possibility to implement templates)!!!

Kind regards,

discoleo

I began splitting this issue up into various sub-issues.

1. IMPROVED HTML-EXPORT
The HTML-Export in Calc is very weak. This is extensively discussed in issue
79866 and issue 61613, see http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=61613.

2. INTERACTIVITY
Issue 79882 seeks to enhance the interactivity in Impress. Especially the
web-proven *HIGHLIGHT CURRENT ROW* should be implemented, adding a nice effect
to the mouse and replacing the ugly pointer.
