1) Spreadsheet freezes  (not responding)  Need to kill process to stop.  All data lost.
2) In spreadsheet, spreadsheet suddenly disappears.  Re-engage Open Office and spreadsheet goes through recovery process, but recently installed data still lost.

I have been using Open Office for years and NEVER encountered these problems before.  Could it be due to windows 10?

No, this behavior is not typical.
Many users report crash after Windows 10 update on the support forum.

Hi Fred,

this is maybe related to i128098.

Which version of Windows 10 are you on (look for "Betriebssystembuild-Info")?
